Confidence for Athletes | Hypnosis & Return-to-Play Mindset | Mike Grafstein
The C.L.E.A.R. Method

Help Your Child Break Free from Freezing Under Pressure, Hesitating After Injury, and Losing Confidence When It Matters Most.

This isn't a confidence problem, it's a protective pattern the nervous system hasn't let go of yet. The RTP C.L.E.A.R. Method™ helps competitive athletes ages 11–19 move past game-day anxiety, hesitation after injury, and the mental side of competition, without reliving the past.

The goal isn't just to stop freezing. It's to become a consistent peak performer.

Why this approach exists

I'm the guy who treats the injury on the field, and the guy who resets the mental side after.

For over 30 years I've worked as an Athletic Therapist, on the field, on the court, in the arena. I kept seeing athletes get physically cleared and still hesitate. That's what led me to formally train in hypnosis and mindset coaching, so I could work both sides of return to play myself, not hand your athlete off to someone new for the part manual therapy can't reach.

More on my full story further down the page.

Mike Grafstein, Master Hypnotist

Your athlete already has the ability.

The skills are there. The training is there. The commitment is there.

But sometimes something changes when the pressure arrives.

A mistake feels bigger than it should.

An injury leaves them hesitant even after they are cleared.

The confidence they show in practice disappears when the game, race, or competition begins.

These patterns can change.

Through gentle, content-free hypnosis and mindset coaching, athletes can learn to create a new relationship with pressure, trust their abilities, and perform with greater freedom.

When it counts most

When Your Athlete Looks Confident in Practice… But Something Changes When It Counts

You know your athlete. You have watched the dedication. You have seen the talent. You know what they are capable of.

But something feels different.

Maybe your athlete

Plays freely during practice but hesitates during competition

Overthinks instead of reacting naturally

Gets stuck on mistakes

Worries about letting teammates down

Holds back after an injury

Feels like they have lost the athlete they used to be

You may hear things like

"I'm not good enough."

"I'm going to mess up again."

"I don't trust my body."

"I'm just not the same anymore."

Often, these thoughts are not shared with coaches or teammates. They come out quietly, on the drive home, after practice, after a difficult game.

What's really happening

What You See May Be Their Mind and Body Trying to Protect Them

They are not lacking confidence. Their brain learned a protective pattern.

When an athlete experiences an injury, mistake, pressure, or overwhelming moment, the brain does what it is designed to do, protect them.

Sometimes that protective response stays active even when the danger has passed.

The athlete may know: "I am safe."

But their body may still respond: "Be careful."

This can show up as

Hesitation

Tightness

Overthinking

Playing cautiously

Avoiding situations they once handled naturally

This is not weakness. It is not a lack of mental toughness. It is a learned response, and learned responses can change.

Beyond positive thinking

Confidence Is More Than Positive Thinking

The challenge isn't always what your athlete thinks. It's what their mind and body have learned.

Many athletes are told: "Just be confident." "Don't think about it." "Shake it off."

But when the nervous system has learned a protective response, simply trying harder is often not enough.

Athletes need a way to help their mind and body create a different response. That is where hypnosis and mindset coaching can help.

What parents are saying

"Thank you so much for the amazing work you do with both my girls. There is a definite difference on the ice, more physical, confident, and having lots of fun. Other people are noticing these changes. I would recommend Mike to any parent whose athlete is struggling to get back to themselves."

Common Questions from Parents

Yes. This is not stage hypnosis and nothing about it removes control from your child. It is a guided relaxation and mindset process where they stay aware and in charge the entire time. Many parents feel unsure about hypnosis before their child's first session, and that is a completely normal reaction. Once you see how the session actually works, that concern tends to ease quickly.

About Mike Grafstein

Helping Athletes Reconnect With Confidence for Over 30 Years

For over 30 years, I've worked as an Athletic Therapist, on the field, on the court, in the arena, and in the clinic doing rehab and sport massage. Long before I formally trained in hypnosis and NLP, I was already unknowingly holding that same space for athletes, guiding them through visualization for return to play and tissue healing.

That pattern kept showing up: an athlete would be physically cleared, physically capable, and still hesitate. It's what led me to formally train as a Master Hypnotist and NLP practitioner, so I could give athletes an intentional version of what I'd already been doing by instinct, helping the mind catch up to what the body already knows.

I've been on every side of this: as a competitive athlete playing ball hockey and men's league hockey, as a coach, and as a therapist treating other athletes. I've also been the one on the table myself. Matrix Repatterning resolved knee issues and concussions I had carried since I was a teenager, and hypnosis and NLP helped me work through my own anxiety and confidence. I know what it feels like when your body will not respond the way your mind wants it to, because I've lived both sides of it, as the person giving the help and the person receiving it.

That breadth of experience, in the clinic and on the field with athletes across hockey, football, rugby, fencing, martial arts, basketball, water polo, and baseball, is exactly why I built a dedicated hypnosis and mindset coaching practice: to give athletes direct support for the part that manual therapy alone was never designed to reach. Most therapists deal with just the physical side. I deal with both

A final word

The athlete you know is still there. Their confidence is not gone. Their ability is not gone.

Sometimes their mind and body simply need help learning that it is safe to trust themselves again.

No pressure. No obligation. Just a conversation to see if this is the right fit.
